Edessa Waterfall Cave

Edessa, Greece

Edessa Waterfall Cave

The cave is located in a very beautiful park, the entrance to the cave is next to a waterfall. It is a small cave with several rooms of different sizes. Unlike other tourist caves, the waterfalls cave was created by the external deposition of dissolved limestone on the mosses that grow under the waterfalls. The waterfalls of Edessa are included in the World Natural Heritage Sites. By the end of the 14th century, a large amount of water had accumulated in the lake west of the city. After a geological phenomenon, possibly an earthquake, water began to flow through the city, forming countless rivers in the process. Hidden by vegetation, the waterfalls remained invisible for a long time. But in 1942, the Germans first saw the tourist power of the waterfalls and developed the surrounding area, creating two pools. In the early 1960s, safe passages were built so that the waterfalls could be admired.
