Underground tunnels of the island

In Megalo Livadi there is a neoclassical monument, an endangered mining heritage of the island, the old mines. You can follow in the footsteps of the miners and cross the underground tunnels from Megalo Livadi to the unspoiled and almost inaccessible (except for the sea) bay of Kalogeros. Abandoned and unguarded for decades, tunnels that no one knows exactly where they lead or what can be found underground. One old mining tunnel, about 1 km long, used to transport ore and for periodic extraction of ore from other intersecting tunnels. In the mines, as elsewhere (e.g. in Lavrio), countless labyrinths, rusty cars, abandoned mining structures, loading ladders and piles of metal remain. Everything reminds of the past of this place, in every outdoor or underground structure, ready to fascinate its explorers. To visit the tunnel, you must have special personal protection equipment and follow the appropriate safety rules. The width and height of the tunnel is small (maximum 3x2) with very good natural ventilation.

Attention!

It is not advisable to enter the tunnels without being accompanied by a specialist, but if you decide to go, it is advisable to do it before lunch.
