To the south of Rethymno is the long and narrow bay of Kalypso, formed between huge steep cliffs with a tiny sandy beach, the bottom of which deepens steeply. In recent years, this area has become very popular with locals and tourists who visit it to take a dip in the crystal clear waters and have their photos taken with this beautiful place as a backdrop. The name comes from the pirates who used to take refuge in this sheltered bay. The place looks like a pool with crystal clear waters and an impressive seabed. Beginning divers can discover a beautiful underwater world with a rich variety of fish, plants and corals. Adventurous divers can enjoy the many beaches with short boat rides. The beach is organised with sunbeds, umbrellas and hotel facilities. According to mythology, Queen Calypso, in this enchanting place, captured the heart of Odysseus, who stayed here for seven long years before returning to his homeland, Ithaca.
