Lighthouse Melagavi

Loutraki, Greece

Lighthouse Melagavi

The Melagavi Lighthouse, also known as the Heraion Lighthouse, takes its name from the ancient temple of Hera, which is located near it and in fact the lighthouse separates the northern entrance to the Gulf of Corinth from the Gulf of Alkionides to the north. The lighthouse helps ships that are heading to, and from, the Corinth Canal. It was first operational in 1897, during the Second World War the lighthouse remained switched off. In 1947, as part of the reconstruction of the lighthouse network, it became operational again, and in 1982 it was electrified (before that it was powered by diesel oil). The amazing lighthouse can be reached on the road from Loutraki to Vouliagmeni Lake.
