Cave of Lakes

The Cave of Lakes is located at an altitude of 827 meters, 17 km from the village of Kalavrita. The lakes inside the cave are something unusual for the Greek region and are a unique geological phenomenon. During winter, the water in the 13 stepped lakes spills from one lake to another, while at other times of the year it remains standing. In the first part of the cave there are no lakes and the horizontal corridor is about 80 meters long and covered with a thick layer of red earth. The second part of the cave is about 700 meters long and differs from the rest by alternating lakes, which were formed at the bottom of the cave by a peculiar carbonate reaction. The third-largest section is more than one kilometer long and has intense sediments. According to scientific research, this section was isolated from the previous part of the lakes and from the next small fourth section with a length of 50 meters where there are more lakes. The total length of the cave is about 2 kilometers and its shape resembles a crawling snake.
