Ammos beach on Sapienza island

The island can be reached by boat from the town of Methoni or nearby villages. At the northern end of the island is a convenient bay and the sandy beach of Ammos, popular with tourists. The island is famous for its rich flora and fauna, including cri-cri and mouflon, which were released here in 1986. An area of 24 hectares of forest and surrounding areas has been declared a state nature reserve. In 1982, 1,100 pheasants were released on the island, as well as song thrushes, common quail and woodcock. To the north of the island there are many shipwrecks, one of the ships at a depth of 10 meters with red granite columns sunk in the first century, and another at a depth of 15 meters with stone sarcophagi sunk in the third century. In the southeastern part of the island is the bay of Porto Logo with the islet of Boba, where according to legend the Apostle Paul landed. In 1892, an octagonal lighthouse, 8 meters high, became operational on the island and was automated in 1989.
