Katafiki Cave

Katafiki Cave is one of the most important and impressive sights of the island of Kythnos. The cave is one of the largest in Greece, with beautiful drip formations that combine natural and anthropogenic elements. Katafiki Cave got its name because it has been used for centuries as a shelter by the islanders during all kinds of invasions and robberies. It is located in the center of the island, in the southern part of Driopis village. This underground creation is 190 meters above sea level and consists of a large natural cave and of artificial mine shafts. The cave was originally created by an underground stream and then used as a mine.
