Lighthouse Turlitis

Tourlitis Lighthouse is located on the island of Andros in Greece and is situated opposite the Venetian Castle. It stands on a rock and has been lighting up the sea for over 120 years.  The picturesque and impressive Tourlitis Lighthouse is also the only lighthouse in Europe built on a rock in the sea. It was built in 1887 and first worked on January 1, 1897. The lighthouse has a height of 7 meters, a focal height of 36 meters and is a class 5 mirror with a brightness of 11 nautical miles. The Turitis Lighthouse stands out for another reason, that it is the first "automatic" lighthouse in Greece with technology that makes it more reliable, as it does not require constant monitoring. During the war, in September 1943, the lighthouse was destroyed as a result of the German bombing of the Italian unit on Andros Island. In 1950, after the reconstruction of lighthouse networks in Greece, it began to function as an automatic generator on the ruins of the old one. Thanks to a donation from the Goulandris family in memory of their daughter Violante, it was restored to its original form in 1994. Since then, it has been functioning again as an automatic generator. Tourlitos Lighthouse is one of the most impressive lighthouses in Greece, which became a postage stamp and traveled around the world as part of the Hellenic Post "Lighthouses of Greece" stamp series.
