Abandoned Royal Palace

The palace was built by order of George I, in the 1870s and 1880s, on the wooded slope of Mount Parnitha, 25 kilometers from the center of Athens. The residence complex includes a palace, a park and various service buildings. In Tatoi was born George II and died Alexander I and Paul I. Since 1880 on the territory of the residence began to form a cemetery for members of the royal family, burials continue after the liquidation of the monarchy. A fire in 1916 destroyed a large number of buildings. A period of instability followed, which did not contribute to the full restoration of the complex. After the coup of the Black Colonels, the palace was confiscated from the royal family and fell into disrepair. Former King Constantine II tried to regain the palace through the courts, but received only a small compensation. In 2007, the Greek government announced plans to create a museum on the territory of the abandoned palace, but so far nothing has changed, and the residence is slowly deteriorating.
