Kavala Fortress

The fortress was built in the early 15th century, next to the old town at the top of the Panagia peninsula. It was built on the remains of the Byzantine Acropolis of Chrystoupolis (former name of the city), which was destroyed in 1391. The fortress was built in different periods: Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods. The fortress has a central tower with inner and outer walls and towers. The main gate shows the separation of the inner and outer wall by a transverse fence. The roof of the central tower offers an amazing view of the city. The buildings where weapons and food were stored in the past were turned into a prison in the 18th century. The whole fortress is built of local granite stone mixed with marble and brick. The fortress houses a modern open-air theater, which regularly hosts musical events, theatrical performances and various festivals.
