Panos Cave

The Panos or Lichnospilia Cave is located at an altitude of 690 meters in the Parnita National Park and is close to the fortress of Filis. The cave can only be accessed through a gorge, climbing up a difficult slope of a beautiful and marvelous route. The cave is accessed by an ancient staircase carved into a small rock in the form of holes. The main hall of the cave is 52 meters long and 5 to 20 meters wide. Stalactites and stalagmites can be seen in the cave. To enter the second room of the cave, you have to crawl through a small hole 15 meters long. Near the entrance to the cave there is a sign that says that the first excavations were carried out here in 1900 by archaeologist Andreas Schias.  About 2,000 lamps from the first centuries AD, as well as copper coins and medical instruments, were found during the excavations. A little lower down, clay figurines, small statuettes of Pan and Hermes, and cult vessels from Mycenaean and prehistoric periods were found. During the excavations, many finds were discovered, where the first layer belongs to the Mycenaean period and the last one to the Middle Byzantine period, when the worship of the gods ceased violently.
