Kalamari Waterfall

The Kalamari Waterfall is located on a hill, a few kilometers from the Gialova Lagoon in southwest Messinia. Its height is about 20 meters, with a small and shallow pond below. To reach the waterfall, you have to follow a path in a mixed forest. On the way to the waterfall, you can find many plants and forest birds. In the pond you can sometimes see a mountain wagtail and you can hear nightingales and other birds singing all the time. There are hawk, owl, oriole, goatherd, yellow wagtail, blackbird, Mediterranean warbler, gray flycatcher, nuthatch, great tit, long-tailed tit and crane. Various species of turtles, frogs, lizards live near the pond, and there are crayfish in the neighborhood. Mammals include foxes, badgers, ferrets, weasels, hedgehogs and other animals. Finally, lake insects and many species of butterflies and dragonflies are of special interest. The best time of year to visit the waterfall is in spring, when there is a large flow of water.
