Hadrian's contribution to the life of Athens was so great that the grateful citizens of Athens named a new district after him. In addition, they erected an arch in his honor in 131-132, built entirely of Pentelian marble (without cement), which led from the old part of the city to the new. There are two inscriptions on the lower level of the arch. Which face each other, yet are on different sides. On the southeast side it says the following: this is the city of Hadrian, not Theseus. On the other side, the northwestern side (towards the Acropolis) you could see the following inscription: this is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus.
