Aba waterfall

Paranymphi, Crete, Greece

Aba waterfall

The waterfall is located in the Aba Gorge, in the wild mountains of Asterousia, on the Mousoulis River, which originates from the Paranifon and Amygdalos springs about 700 meters above sea level. The waterfall of Aba is 145 meters high and is one of the highest waterfalls in Greece. Just above the waterfall there is a road that takes you to the Three Churches. There is a ruined watermill in the parking lot, and from there a very short path along the cliff begins, leading to a spot with a beautiful view of the waterfall and the sea. Although it seems unthinkable to descend to the foot of the waterfall without technical equipment, according to the testimonies of the inhabitants an old path led to it. In fact, the name Abbas is said to come from the word "abbas" (priest), as a monk once practiced at the foot of a large waterfall. The gorge is after the big waterfall and ends at the sea, there are other smaller waterfalls. The gorge is protected by the speleological associations of Crete, so a small group of experienced climbers can descend to it in about 7 hours.
