Asos Castle

The Venetian Castle is located at the top of the Assos peninsula and is the larger of the two castles on the island of Kefalonia. In 1584, the people of Kefalonia petitioned the Venetian Senate for a new castle. Since the castle of St. George is located in the south of the island and in case of attack of enemies or pirates could not protect the northern part of the island. The Venetians decided that the peninsula would be the ideal place to build the castle. Construction began in 1593 under the direction of Ambrosius Cornelius, as written on the sign at the main gate, and was completed two years later. The castle was for several years the capital of the northern part of the island. When the Venetians occupied the island of Lefkada, the castle lost its strategic value and fell into disrepair. The vaulted gates have survived to this day and will impress you. The 3000 meters long walls, the residence of the Venetian Lord and the barracks have also survived to this day.
