One of the most famous sights, which at the same time is the main geological phenomenon of the island of Kefalonia is the Κatavothres - Shells. They are located 2 km from the island's capital Argostoli, in the area of Lassi. The sea water enters the cracks near the shore and disappears. In fact, the water that reaches this point follows a long path that crosses underground almost the entire island. The water ends its journey in the area of Karavomilos and in Lake Melissani. This fact was discovered in 1963, when Austrian geologists threw pigments into one of these entrances, and then using radioisotopes checked the flow of disappearing water. In addition to the amount of water is added rainwater, which at some point is found underground. The mills were built by an Englishman named Stuens, who was the first to notice this phenomenon. The great earthquakes of 1867 and 1953 did not affect it, except that they destroyed the surface structure, which has been restored.
